Welcome to the hidden hardship project website!

This project runs until January 2024 and is funded by the British Academy and Leverhulme Trust. Run by Dr Stephanie Denning at the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations at Coventry University, it is looking at rural hidden hardship.

The project aims to understand the experiences of people in hardship in the rural North Cotswolds in Gloucestershire, UK.

The North Cotswolds? Isn’t that a posh area? Yes there is plenty of expensive housing with wealthy residents but there are also people experiencing hardship and they are largely hidden to onlookers, and even to wealthier local residents.

Stephanie is using a combination of participatory research, interviews, and diaries with people experiencing and/or responding to hardship in the rural North Cotswolds to investigate the issue of hidden rural hardship.

Outcomes of the research will include a report for policymakers on hidden rural hardship, and a travelling exhibition with the artist Beth Waters.
